Omari and I are back this week with a full breakdown of the Detroit Pistons first preseason game of the 2023-2024 NBA season as they took on the Phoenix Suns. We got our first look at former No.1 overall pick, Cade Cunningham, in just under a year as he returns from last season’s shin surgery. We also breakdown the play of the other young core members of Jaden Ivey, Ausar Thompson and Jalen Duren.

It is just one preseason game but we can also start to dissect what the starting lineup was and the overall rotation. What does the pulse seem to be for players like Killian Hayes, Marvin Bagley III and James Wiseman? Preseason games are also good to see some of the lesser known talent on the roster from E-10 contracts and two-way players. Did any of those guys make an impression in their minutes?

It is just a taste but Monday was media for most teams across the NBA and that included the Detroit Pistons. Who do Omari and I WANT to be in the starting lineup and who do we THINK will be in the starting lineup? What will the overall 10 man rotation be? What is the best closing lineup that can be put on the floor? Best floor spacing?

The Pistons Pulse Podcast w/Bryce Simon of MotorCityHoops & Omari Sankofa II of The Detroit Free Press

The Pistons Pulse is brought to you by The Detroit Free Press and is co hosted by Bryce Simon of MotorCityHoops and Omari Sankofa II, Detroit Pistons beat writer for The Detroit Free Press.

I am solo again this week with Omari taking a much deserved, and needed, vacation after a long season and off-season (Omari will be back next week). In his absence we still have some great content for you as DetroitBadBoys’ own DBB Live crew of Jack Kelly and Wes Davenport join me to talk Detroit Pistons basketball.

Jack and Wes are doing an amazing job with the DBB Lives and that is something you should be checking out on a weekly basis if you are not already. DetroitBadBoys YouTube Link to DBB LIVE.

We get some thoughts on the off-season from Jack and Wes but then really dive into some individual players and one aspect of their game we would really like to see improve this season. Where does Cade Cunningham need to improve for this team to be successful? Where is the biggest growth for Jaden Ivey? Jalen Duren? Isaiah Stewart?

The discussion then ventures a little more into the future and who we think is on this team when they are truly competing deep into the playoffs. Who are truly members of the “core”? What moves will ultimately happen to get them where they want to go?

We also touch on overall expectations for this season and what we think the team can be.

I am solo this week with Omari taking a much deserved, and needed, vacation after a long season and off-season. Omari will be absent for this episode and next week’s - where I will be joined by the DBB Live crew, Wes Davenport and Jack Kelly - before returning for our episode on September 19th.

For the 86th episode of The Pistons Pulse I had the pleasure of being joined by friend of the podcast, Keith Smith. Keith is probably our most frequent guest on the podcast and one of the best as there is nobody better with NBA and salary cap conversation.

I get the chance to talk with Keith about the Detroit Pistons off-season and how he feels about the moves made by Troy Weaver. Of course I have to ask him about the Pistons drafting of Overtime Elite star, Ausar Thompson, with the No. 5 overall pick and what he thought about him after watching live at NBA Summer League.

We then dive into the rest of the Pistons off-season that proved to be a little uneventful considering the expectations some had with the amount of salary cap space that was available to the organization. Does Keith think a different path could, and should, have been taken by Weaver and the front office?

After taking a look at the past, we actually look towards the future. How is the team set up to make potential moves at the NBA Trade Deadline or next off-season? There is often mixed feelings about the idea of cap space within the NBA, especially for certain destinations that many deem less desirable, but I ask Keith about the value of that cap space and other ways it can be used if not for big named free agents.

Omari and I are back this week with another great episode of The Pistons Pulse. This week we truly dive into the upcoming season for the first time with our Pistons Pulse Player Projections. We did this same activity right around a year ago in anticipation for the Detroit Pistons 2022-2023 season and took some real heat from the fanbase for our lower expectations of Jaden Ivey’s rookie season.

Tune into this episode to see if we do the same thing with No. 5 overall pick, Ausar Thompson, and the Pistons second first round pick, Marcus Sasser. We also fully dive into many of the other players on the roster and give our thoughts on what we expect their statlines to be during the 2023-2024 season.

Entering his fourth season with the Pistons, where do the box score numbers go for Killian Hayes? And, does he even finish the season on this roster? What kind of usage and numbers is James Wiseman going to put up in his first full season with this organization? Does Isaiah Stewart make the jump that many fans expect, and many don’t, that will warrant the contract extension he received over the summer?

During the middle portion of the episode we dive into three of the most exciting young players on the roster in Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren. Do Omari and I see a big statistical jump coming from Jalen Duren in year two? Will our projections for Jaden Ivey again be too low? And, just how high are we on a healthy Cade Cunningham?

Omari and I are back this week with another great episode of The Pistons Pulse. This week we had the honor of being joined by THE Detroit Pistons historian, Keith Black Trudeau. Keith joined the original Motor City Hoops podcast in its early days to go through the entire history of the organization but this week we are going to try and stay focused on just the end of the Grant Hill era and the start of the Goin’ to Work squad.

We talk to Keith about the end of Grant Hill’s time in the Motor City and what all went into him being traded to the Orlando Magic. Hill is actually someone that Keith has had on his podcast, Bad Boys and Beyond, as a guest with his co-host Mike Payton.

Of course, this trade brought back one of the core members of the Goin’ to Work squad, Ben Wallace. We ask Keith what the perception of the trade was when it happened and how it all came to fruition.

We then really dive into the formation of this team and how they came to be. What was the fan reaction and perception of acquiring Chauncey Billups and “Rip” Hamilton? What was the scouting report on Tayshaun Prince when he was drafted by the team? Why did the trade for Rashee Wallace end up being such a perfect trade deadline addition?

To finish off the episode we ask Keith about Dave Bing and Dave DeBusschere inspired by a request from a fan who felt like they were being a little disrespected in fans memories of their careers and impacts on the organization. We also give Keith a chance to talk about the current iteration of the Pistons and how he feels about the state of the team.

Omari and I are back this week with another great episode of The Pistons Pulse. This week we had the honor of being joined by one of the original Detroit Pistons content creators and a contributor at DetroitBadBoys, Laz Jackson.

We knew Pistons fans were missing Laz talk Detroit Pistons basketball so we felt like this was the perfect time to have him on to talk about Cade Cunningham and how he has seemingly taken the NBA off-season by storm after his performance with the USA Select team. We discuss why national media seems to have forgotten about Cunningham and what we expect from the former No. 1 overall pick in this third season with the Pistons.

After a healthy discussion about Cunningham, the three of us all dive into his backcourt running mate, Jaden Ivey. We discuss the impact of Cunningham on Ivey’s game and what role we see being ultimately the best for Ivey as an individual and in terms of contributing to winning. Laz also shares his thoughts on fellow second year player, Jalen Duren. Was what we saw at NBA Summer League on the offensive end something he wants to see more of? And where is the biggest improvement needed from the 19-year-old big man?

Finally, we finish off the episode discussing the No. 5 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, Ausar Thompson. Laz was a fan of Thompson even before the pick was made and he outlines what made him so excited about the young OTE star.
