Van Gundy was openly disappointed with the team's rebounding and defensive effort in their first preseason game.

It was no secret after the first preseason game that Stan Van Gundy was disappointed with the team's display of defense and rebounding. The Pistons were outrebounded by the Bulls 48-40 and allowed the Bulls to attempt 39 free throws. As Van Gundy tends to do, he pulled no punches and made it explicitly clear after the game:

"I didn't think we sustained that [energy] defensively down the stretch, I'm very disappointed in our defense and our rebounding." [...]

"It's not ingrained, it's not enough of a habit," Van Gundy said Wednesday, referring to the Pistons' defensive intensity. "And again, we've been in the bottom 10 defensively for the last four years. When you've got ingrained bad habits, it takes time to get good habits."

"As soon as we start just playing 5-on-5, I think our mentality is more on the offensive end and we are a step slow in everything we're doing defensively, because I don't think our mentality is really quite there yet," Van Gundy said. "But I think you continue to develop that in practice, you repeat things and situations hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of times, until you're really not having to think about it any more and you get better. That's going to take time to get those reps in. But we'll put that time in."

Defending without fouling and blocking out and rebounding are two of the six defensive priorities in Van Gundy's "musts" he's trying to ingrain in Detroit. Not exactly novel basketball concepts, but extremely important to execute and easy enough to evaluate.

The Pistons did a much better job of both in Thursday night's 94-80 win -- the Pistons outrebounded the Bucks 53-48 and cut down on the whistles. Van Gundy noted the improvement:

"The rebounding, I was happy with. We did some things better," he said. "We started picking up the roll man on pick and rolls a little better. But we can still play better than that defensively. I know that. And I know we'll have to."

We will continue to pay close attention to Van Gundy's defensive (and offensive) musts throughout the season. I'm thinking we'll check some boxes each game to see how the team did. What do you think?

Now, your thoughts.

The Pistons outscored the Bucks 75-51 in the final three quarters en route to a 94-80 win.

The Pistons are undefeated in the Stan Van Gundy era, improving to 2-0 in the 2014 preseason with a 94-80 win against the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday night.

The Pistons outscored the Bucks 75-51 after the first quarter behind 20 points from second-year shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope's (on nine shots!) and Andre Drummond's double-double off the bench (15 points and 16 rebounds). Caldwell-Pope started at shooting guard, because Jodie Meeks was a late scratch due to a back spasms. Drummond came off the bench as part of Van Gundy's plan to rotate his big men in the starting lineup during the preseason.

Caldwell-Pope now has 38 points in two preseason games, continuing his success from the summer league. No, Zach Lowe, his name (or Kyle Singler's) does not belong here.

Free agent signee Cartier Martin saw his first action of the preseason, but only hit 1-of-5 threes off the bench. He did not play on Tuesday due to a injured shoulder. The Pistons hit only 19 percent of their threes against the Bucks.

You can see some highlights from the game at NBA.com. Box score, too.

Jodie Meeks was a late scratch for the Pistons' second 2014 preseason game.

Penciled in to start his second straight preseason game, free agent signee Jodie Meeks was a late scratch on Thursday night against the Milwaukee Bucks due to back spasms. Second-year guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope started in his spot.

There is no word as to how serious the spasms are and if they will keep Meeks out any longer than a single game (the Pistons play again on Sunday). Meeks was ruled out moments before tip off. In fact, it was such a late call that Pistons public address announcer John Mason still announced Jodie Meeks as the starter to The Palace crowd:

Mason introduced Jodie Meeks in the starting lineup, which was a surprise to KCP.

— Dave Hogg (@Stareagle) October 9, 2014

Meeks scored 13 points in 25 minutes in his Pistons debut on Tuesday night against the Bulls, hitting 3-of-8 from three. His performance was overshadowed by Caldwell-Pope's 18 points off the bench, though. Meeks could quickly find himself out of favor at the starting shooting guard spot, which wouldn't necessarily be a bad problem to have -- both are going to be productive.

We'll update Meeks' injury situation as more information becomes available.

Stan Van Gundy has vowed to mix and match rotations throughout the preseason. He continues that on Thursday against the Bucks.

If you saw our FanShot earlier, you know that Van Gundy has already planned his "Big 3" rotations for the next two preseason games. Greg Monroe will start at center on Thursday night vs. the Bucks with Josh Smith at the power forward. Andre Drummond and Monroe will start on Sunday on the road against the Wizards.

Van Gundy also announced on Thursday that D.J. Augustin would start at point guard against the Bucks with Brandon Jennings coming off the bench. Kyle Singler will start at small forward instead of Caron Butler, who will get the old-man's courtesy night off. Jodie Meeks will get the starting nod at shooting guard again.

It's not yet clear who will start at point guard, shooting guard or small forward on Sunday. But here's what we know:

It's possible Cartier Martin, who missed Tuesday's game with a shoulder injury, could see his first action of the preseason.

I wouldn't put too much concern into starters and rotations just yet. I doubt it has anything to do with first-game performance and instead has everything to do with Van Gundy simply wanting to get a better feel for what he'll be working with when the regular season tips, and by then, hopefully it will make all the sense in the world.

Game time against the Bucks is 7:30 p.m. ET. We'll have your GameThread ready for you an hour or so before tip off.

Now, your thoughts.
