There's a lot of smoke surrounding the Detroit Pistons and their alleged pursuit of a backup point guard before today's 3 p.m. ET trade deadline, but there might not be a flame. Stan Van Gundy poured water on the rumors today when speaking to reporters, denying the team has talked about acquiring Miami Heat's Norris Cole or Brooklyn Nets' Jarrett Jack:

Things change fast on deadline day, so perhaps we'll see a surprise move develop in the final 40 minutes before the deadline. For what it's worth, trades must be submitted to the league by 3 p.m., but it's possible they may not be processed or announced until shortly thereafter. So we all have at least another hour of refreshing Twitter.

The 10-year veteran has one year left on his contract.

The Detroit Pistons reportedly contacted the Brooklyn Nets about Joe Johnson's availability. This much seems clear. When this happened or how seriously the Pistons were interested is up for debate, but it seems the Pistons might also be looking at Nets guard Jarrett Jack, according to ESPN's Brian Windhorst.

Jack, 31, makes more sense from a financial perspective. While Johnson is owed nearly $25 million in 2015-16, Jack will make just $6.3 million next season, with a team option for the same in 2016-17.

The Pistons also have repeatedly been linked with Miami Heat point guard Norris Cole. Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press tweeted there's not actually much interest from Detroit, but the national media is hearing something different:

Perhaps the Heat are floating the Pistons name out there in hopes of driving up Cole's value? It's hard to say. But it does seem clear that the Pistons are looking for an upgrade over John Lucas III at the backup point guard spot. Cole might not be that -- especially from an offensive perspective -- but Jack is. A 10-year veteran, Jack has shot .350 from 3-point range for his career.

He'd leave the Pistons with a logjam at point guard next year, depending who they'd have to give up to get him, but Brandon Jennings, D.J. Augustin and Spencer Dinwiddie are versatile enough to see time at shooting guard if need be.

Stan Van Gundy and Jeff Bower are reportedly still inquiring about the Heat point guard.

We've been here before. It was earlier reported that the Pistons were interested in acquiring Norris Cole from Miami, and that Jonas Jerebko had been offered for the struggling point guard, only to have Pat Riley add Danny Granger to the deal, subsequently severing communications between both teams. However, ESPN's Marc Stein believes that the Pistons are still interested in the defensive minded point, and could agree to a deal if Granger is dropped from the conversation.

DBB's Sean Corp had this to say of the original trade speculation regarding both teams:

The 26-year-old Cole is shooting 38 percent on the year, has a 47 percent career true shooting percentage and has never been much of a ball handler with the Heat. He's been an adequate 3-point shooter before this season so if you squint really hard you can see how he might sort of make sense for Detroit.

But, honestly, I'm not seeing anything that tells me his defense is nearly good enough to make up for his putrid offense, and he wouldn't be a good enough ball handler to help get other guys open looks, and that is what Detroit needs around Jodie Meeks, Anthony Tolliver and Caron Butler or Kentavious Caldwell-Pope or Kyle Singler.

Are the Pistons still looking to add Cole, or is Marc Stein trying to revive a defunct trade rumor? The Detroit Free Press' Vince Ellis reports that Stan Van Gundy and the Pistons are 'quiet on the trade front' and that the Pistons coach doesn't expect to make any moves prior to the deadline.

Would you rather see the Pistons trade for Cole, or stand pat?

The 32 year-old Timberwolf has been linked to the Pistons.

According to KTSP's Darren Wolfson, the Detroit Pistons are one of four teams interested in acquiring veteran Guard Mo Williams, although Motown has a "small chance" in the Williams sweepstakes, it would indicate that the potential trade initially reported by MLive's David Mayo could have fallen through.

Mayo earlier reported that Stan Van Gundy offered Jonas Jerebko to the Miami Heat for a struggling Norris Cole, however, in a turn of events that has apparently plagued the Pistons, Pat Riley upped the ante and added Danny Granger to the trade discussions. Van Gundy cut off the talks, presumably due to his reluctance to take on an aging Granger who has a $2 million player option for the 2015-16 season. Since then, the Pistons have been linked to Minnesota's Mo Williams, who, although has suffered shooting the ball this season, is still averaging 12.5 Points and 6.4 Assists as the Timberwolves' backup point guard.

The 11-year veteran is on contract until the end of the year for $3.75 million, he would bring the Pistons leadership and a floor general able to distribute and, to a certain extent, be a threat from the three-point line. The Timberwolves would be ideal trade partners for the Pistons, who are looking to unload a newly redundant Jerebko and bench-warming Luigi Datome, whilst the Wolves are listening to offers for Williams, and are looking to honor Chase Budinger's trade request. Budinger, a DBB favorite, has two years, $10 million remaining on his contract, including a player option for next season. The 26 year-old former Arizona Wildcat shot 40.2% from deep during the 2011-2012 season prior to tearing his meniscus in 2013, since then, he has dealt with various injuries, which have limited him to 74 games in his first two seasons with Minnesota.

Considering Van Gundy turned down Granger's $2 million option, odds are Budinger's $5 million might be too much to gamble on for the Pistons. However, Mo Williams would prove to be a valuable piece for Detroit, and ticks all of SVG's pre-requisites for the job -- barring defense. For the deal to work however, it would mean that the Pistons would have to give up a pick, or possibly Jonas Jerebko's expiring contract. That being said, a return of Mo Williams would be far more desirable than one consisting of Norris Cole and Miami's spare parts.

Stan Van Gundy told Keith Langlois at Pistons.com that the Detroit would bring in their newest addition in this week, who would you rather see dress up in a Piston uniform come the end of the week?

Adding depth to the PG position is seeming to be harder than expected.

Although the Pistons have been linked to New York's Pablo Prigioni, Miami's Norris Cole and the D-League's Lorenzo Brown (who just signed with the Timberwolves), nothing has progressed past "exploratory" talks. Van Gundy has gone on record to say that the Pistons will not sacrifice current and future assets in their hunt for a floor-general, but during the pre-game interviews in Philadelphia, the Pistons' head coach let on that the team is struggling to find the right deal. Per The Detroit Free Press's Vince Ellis:

"As much as we'd like to get it done really soon, we also would like to make what we think is the best decision," Van Gundy said. "We sort of know Plan A, Plan B, Plan C, but Plan A has to sort itself out first before you go on to the others so it could be a couple of days still. It's not just trades, it's player availability, too. Not everybody's willing to make a decision as quickly as we are. Some other people are waiting on some other things. Again, it's not just trades."

Ellis continues to write that the teams that the Pistons have contacted have been asking for more than what the Pistons are willing to offer, demanding picks or inquiring about the availability of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and other young prospects. Luigi Datome and Jonas Jerebko are apparently on the block according to Ellis, but those players alone are apparently not drawing much interest.

Since losing Brandon Jennings to an Achilles tear, D.J. Augustin and Spencer Dinwiddie have been manning the point with very mixed results. Augustin had a career shooting night in the team's loss to the Raptors, and was productive against a red-hot Cleveland team, but managed only two points and four assists in 34 minutes in a blowout loss against the lowly Philadelphia 76ers. Dinwiddie, the 38th Selection in this year's draft has managed 3.3 points, 2.3 assists across 1.0 turnovers in 12.3 minutes per game while shooting .231/.000/1.000 as the Pistons' backup point guard. Help is needed, badly.

The Pistons are at the mercy of other team's trade needs, though. They are in dire need of a third PG and their trade partners know it, playing hardball was to be expected, but the price still seems too high to pay for a one-year rental. With an open roster spot and trade possibilities seemingly drying up, the D-League and Free Agency is looking to be the more viable option for the Pistons at this point. Van Gundy suggested the team would have found the right deal between Thursday and the end of the week-end, but with the team's current points struggling, other teams' lack of interest in the Pistons' offers and D-League prospects getting snatched up by other teams, Detroit is going to have to settle soon if it wants to pick up a player who can impact the team and help Detroit's playoff push.
